Chemical Sciences
- The research group in Chemical Sciences has developed activities in the following areas:Synthesis and characterization of new platinum complexes as potential anticancer drugs, with particular interest in the production of bifunctional compounds (capable of simultaneously releasing drugs with synergistic mechanism of action) and selective vectors towards tumor tissues and cells (drug targeting and delivery).
- Nano and core-shell bioactive microspheres for drug delivery.
- Preparation and characterization of paramagnetic probes for diagnostic applications of MRI and theranostic Imaging (diagnostics and therapy coupled in a single probe), with particular attention to: synthesis of polyamino carboxylic chelators and complexes based on Gd (III) and Mn (II) and their NMR and relaxometric multinuclear characterization; conjugation of molecular paramagnetic probes to biological vectors or to organic nanoparticulate systems and organic / inorganic hybrids; Development of paramagnetic inorganic nanoparticles; synthesis of molecular probes responsive to the tissue microenvironment for applications in molecular and cellular imaging.
- Synthesis and characterization of the molecular, crystalline structure and of the chemical-physical properties of different materials, with the use of both experimental methodologies (X-ray diffraction from powders and single crystal, Raman, IR, UV-Vis and NMR spectroscopy, as well as thermogravimetric and microscopic methods (TEM and SEM) and theoretical (ab initiation and molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics calculations).
- Development of new inorganic materials and organic / inorganic hybrids with porous and lamellar structure, to obtain catalysts for clean processes and for the production of energy with low environmental impact.
- Development of materials for electro-luminescent devices which are the basis for the construction of light emitting diodes (LEDs), for applications in the electronics industry, in the construction of information panels, automobile displays, etc.
- Development of nanoadditives with functional properties for polymers and cementitious binders and for gas absorption.
- Development of porous aromatic polymers with high gas storage capacity as energy carriers: experimental and computational studies of structural and adsorption properties.
- Optical sensors through the self-assembly of functional microspheres or lamellar systems in structures organized in two (monolayers) and three (opals) dimensions.
- Study and application of block copolymers for nanolithographic technologies, including the advanced analysis of ultra-thin films.
- Technological implementation of high efficiency systems for the functionalization of surfaces, the preparation of organized nanometric structures and their metrological characterization.
